Year of Environmental Sustainability

In 2010 the Queensland Department of Education and Training is encouraging students, schools and staff members to embrace all things ‘green' with the launch of the Year of Environmental Sustainability (YES). This initiative forms the Department of Education and Training's response to the Queensland Governments Q2 Vision and Climate Smart 2050 Policy.

Students and schools will engage with a range of initiatives that support student learning and highlight the importance of sustainable practices at home, school and in the community. During the year, primary schools will begin work on a School's Environmental Management Plan (SEMP) which will audit their energy use and identify areas where they can plan for a greener future.

YES will also encourage the leaders and decision makers of tomorrow to make environmental sustainability a daily practice. YES will encompass all Queensland schools as well as district and central offices. Key themes to focus activity have been developed for each school term (Queensland Government, 2009). These are:

  • Term one – Energy
  • Term two – Waste
  • Term three – Biodiversity
  • Term four – Water consumption

FWR Group has supported sustainability in schools since the businesses inception and welcomes the Year of Environmental Sustainability as a great step forward in developing the ecochampions of the future.
