Sustainable urban development, including planning code requirements and GreenStar reporting

A simplified definition for sustainable urban development might be, "the creation of urban communities for current and future generations, that provides for Livability, Vitality and Equity based on the protection and maintenance of natural systems".

Conceptually, as the basis for developing future communities, sustainability is not just achieving a balance across environmental, social and economic considerations, but rather is about achieving the integration of these issues within the natural environment, to the long term benefit of all. With local governments looking to encourage more sustainable urban development through revised planning scheme codes, and increasing requirements under the Building Code of Australia, and the uptake of development rating systems such as EnviroDevelopment and GreenStar, the standard required of new urban development represents a real challenge for the industry.

FWR Group works with its clients to prepare development strategies and plans based on well recognised characteristics for sustainable urban development:

  • compact urban forms that minimise impacts on natural resources and environmental values;
  • buildings that are designed and oriented to maximise climatic benefits and reduce the demand for energy, water, with reduced demand for raw construction materials and waste generation during construction;
  • well-protected systems of wildlife habitats and open space for environmental and recreational value;
  • well-designed activity centres focused around public transport hubs, with efficient infrastructure and well-utilised public transport;
  • high levels of accessibility to activities and services through transport and communication systems;
  • healthy, safe and vibrant communities with a strong sense of place and local identity;
  • respect for diversity and cultural heritage; and
  • diverse employment opportunities and local economic activity.
