ClimateSmart Retail and Business
The Queensland Government supports the national target of 60 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and in June 2007 launched ClimateSmart 2050, Queensland climate change strategy: a low carbon future.
ClimateSmart 2050 represents a total initial investment of $1.4 billion and includes ground-breaking initiatives to position Queensland in a low-carbon future.
The Queensland Climate Change Fund provides $30 million per year for climate change initiatives, particularly those that target measures to assist households and communities to prepare for a low carbon future.
The Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) has worked extensively with FWR Group Pty. Ltd. to develop a retail business partnership program called ClimateSmart Retail. The program aims to equip and support retail staff so they can help consumers choose energy and water efficient appliances and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and running costs. ClimateSmart Retail supports appliance retailers to educate consumers through personal contact at the point of sale and via displays and information explaining the energy and water efficiency of goods on the shop floor.
Participating retail staff will be able to demonstrate the cost benefits of efficient appliances. Retail outlets can play a key role in educating consumers on the energy and water efficiency of household appliances during the purchase decision process.
The program will help retail staff to:
- demystify the ‘energy star' and the WELS ‘water star' rating system for consumers;
- provide sales staff and consumers with information on comparative operating costs within each product range; and
- provide sales staff with tips on maximising appliance efficiency they can pass on to consumers.
