Brisbane City Council Climate Mitigation and Adaption Strategy

FWR Group is currently working with the Brisbane City Council on furthering its progress on the challenge of climate change. Globally, Local Government agencies are facing key issues in addressing climate change including establishing a basis for climate change risk assessment, management, reporting and adaptation, using a range of currently available frameworks and tools – looking at issues and outcomes within the organisation of Councils, and for the community.

Whilst climate change mitigation programs, largely through efforts to reduce GHG emissions, have been successfully undertaken by many Councils including BCC, adapting our cities to climate change remains a significant challenge. In December 2008, we delivered to BCC a Climate Change Adaptation Discussion Paper, outlining current issues and opportunities for BCC related to climate change adaptation, and setting the way forward for the next steps.

There are a number of issues faced by Council, including implementing policy and choosing from the range of frameworks currently available to guide the long term approach to the issue – Council has identified the need to determine a preferred framework and establish a clear plan for responding to climate change with agreed actions, milestones and indicators of success. FWR Group is very happy to have the opportunity to work with BCC in meeting the challenge of climate change.
